LABTERRA, Studies and Research Centre on Regional raw earth Architecture, has been active since November 1997 at the Department of Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering of Cagliari. The Head of the Centre is Prof. Ing. Antonello Sanna, the technical coordination is entrusted to the architect Maddalena Achenza. Together, they have been protagonists of the major information and awareness-raising initiatives organised in Sardinia since the early 1990s. The Centre works in coordination with other research programs concerning traditional and vernacular architectures, with particular attention to construction techniques and natural and sustainable materials.

Labterra collaborates with public administrations to recover and plan the territory; with construction companies, supervising construction products and sites. The Centre has also close contacts abroad with Institutions that have developed in recent years a more intense research and laboratory activity, CRATerre in France, ESG of Vila Nova de Cerveira in Portugal, UPV of Valencia in Spain, and a structured exchange of experiences with the Faculties of Engineering and Architecture in Udine, Florence, Palermo, Naples, the Polytechnics of Milan and Turin, with ICCROM of Rome, ICOMOS, the Getty Conservation Institute and UNESCO. In 2009 he obtained the Unitwin Unity Chair "Architecture in raw earth. Constructive cultures and sustainable development ".
